2016 · The Beginning

The African Science Academy opens its doors

The African Science Academy opened its doors for the first time as Africa's first post-secondary STEM academy for academically gifted girls from across the continent.

2017 · Official Launch

Recognition from the British High Commissioner

Official launch with former British High Commissioner Jon Benjamin, who commended ASA saying: "We are proud that Ghana is the country where this wonderful project is located. And proud that ASA students are completing the gold-standard Cambridge International A-Levels, representing the potential of British qualifications to stretch the minds of Africa's best and brightest."

2018 · First Graduates

100% of our first cohort pursue higher education

The first cohort graduates and 100% pursue higher education with full scholarships to universities such as Ashesi University, University of Edinburgh and KNUST, Ghana. ASA students also met Ghanaian President H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo at a women-in-tech event in Accra.

2019 · Scaling Impact

Maths Masterclasses launch and a presidential visit

ASA launched the ASA Maths Masterclasses, training secondary school maths teachers across Ghana with a focus on gender and inclusivity in the classroom. ASA also hosted the first female President of Mauritius, Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, and SHEROES Executive Director Flossy Menson, leaving students with Dr Ameenah's words: "the future of Africa lies in our minds, not in our mines."

2020 · Fourth Cohort

Meeting Ghana's youngest female pilot

Our fourth cohort had the privilege of meeting Ghana's youngest female pilot, Audrey Maame Esi Swatson, during their first semester at the academy. She reminded our students that their age was not a factor, leaving our future leaders inspired with the words: "if there's something you want to do, do it now while you are young!"

2021 · Reopening

After COVID, ASA reopens its doors

After closing during the COVID pandemic, ASA reopened in May 2021 to welcome more gifted young women from across Africa.

2022 · Record Results & Recognition

Best-ever A-Levels and a British Council award

The fifth ASA cohort graduated with our best-ever A-Level results: 100% of students awarded A–C in Maths and Physics, and 94% in Further Maths. ASA also received The British Council Partner Schools Award for Best School GCE AS & A-Level School.

2023 · Expansion

A new school building opens

By March 2023, an additional school building was officially completed, expanding ASA's capacity to welcome more students from across the continent.

2024 · Recognition

A second British Council award

In 2024, ASA received The British Council Partner Schools Award for Best School Across 2 Subjects, recognising sustained excellence in both Maths and Physics teaching.

2025 · Beyond the Classroom

Experiences that shape future leaders

ASA students took part in a rich programme beyond the classroom, attending Girls in Aviation and the She Power Summit, sharing their skills by teaching younger children in the local community, and engaging with an extensive programme of guest speakers from across STEM, leadership and industry.

The doors to the African Science Academy (ASA) opened in August 2016 as Africa's first specialist STEM-focused academy for girls.

ASA is a girls-only Advanced Level school for young women from across Africa with outstanding maths and science potential. In just one academic year, our students complete globally respected Cambridge International A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics. We also provide robotics and computer science programmes alongside the A-Level curriculum to prepare students for careers in Engineering, Science, Computing and beyond. Means-tested scholarships and bursaries are provided for all students.
